Right at the start of this new day at 00:30 am EDT did the Sun make ingress to Aries, the first sign of the tropical zodiac, marking the Vernal Equinox and the beginning of spring here in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s also the beginning of the astrological year. Day and night are of equal length today, poised and balanced, but about to tip over on the side of the light. This is reversed in the Southern Hemisphere, where now Autumn begins. All solar festivals are quarter days in the wheel of the year when the Sun enters a cardinal sign and ushers in a new season. Therefore, the energies present at this potent moment are relevant for the duration of it. However, the Spring Equinox can have influence over the entire year, revealing the trends that will ‘shoot up’ like the germs that pierce the harsh crust of the soil at this time of the year. The festival itself is sacred to dawn, the east, the morning star and to youth. Eostre, from whose name the direction east and the holiday Easter is derived, is a dawn goddess of the Saxons, like Aurora and Eos. Just as the dawn is the time of new light, so is the Vernal Equinox the time of new life. Holidays in March are dedicated to all the great fertility goddesses, who show themselves in the blossoms, the leaves on the trees, the sprouting of the crops, the mating of birds and the birth of young animals. In the agricultural cycle, it is time for planting. We are assured that life will continue. Consequently, the Sun’s transit through Aries corresponds to a time of emergence, birth, new beginnings and strong self-expression, when we feel the urge to initiate action on our behalf, to pioneer things and to conquer unchartered territory; when self-determination, impatience and willfulness are on the rise and when we are courageous, fierce and impulsive, even daring, as we push forward. Moreover, during this period will we be more inclined to assert our animus or the yang principle as well as tend to be driven and to act from an instinctual or primal level.
In the chart for this year’s Spring Equinox we see Chiron hovering on the South Node in Pisces, telling us that we need to release or let go off the source of our accumulated problems or hurt in order to be able to heal or become whole. With Ceres approaching this conjunction, we’re standing at the closing of a cycle, but we don’t have a clear picture of the future yet, only a vague vision of our destination. We’re aware though that we have to stop sacrificing for the ‘wrong’ causes, where we don’t see any returns. Instead, we should pour our support into those causes, which are worth our while and help us mending. This is even more emphasized by the conjunction of Venus and Neptune in Pisces that begins a new sub-cycle, during which we long for our highest values, seek to pursue the lifestyle that’s most suitable to our desires and needs as well as the ideal we’re having in regard to relationships, wellbeing and fulfillment. With these two planets coming together today, there’s something of the sacred feminine touching us and we’re highly sensitive as well as receptive, plus our imagination is enhanced. We sense vividly that our dreams can come true if we commit us toward a better future and invest our energies accordingly. All it takes is making the choices that are right for us and to focus on our progress. The waning square between retrograde Jupiter in Virgo and Saturn in Sagittarius challenges us to overcome our increased responsibilities and limitations so that we can review our options and work out new possibilities or improve our chances. As Jupiter ruled Mars in Sagittarius casts a quincunx to Vesta in Taurus, an adjustment in the way we operate and in regard to the things that motivate us is needed.
Tarot card of the day is the “3 of Cups”, representing wonderful connections, reunions and the celebration of friendship and harmonious relationships in general. It heralds a sociable day when we spend quality time with friends and loved ones and experience camaraderie as well as a feeling of oneness. We could be bursting with energy and overflowing with high spirits. Things should be going well.
