The First Quarter Moon of the Cancer lunation cycle will transpire tonight at 8:51 pm EDT. This cycle has started out on July 4, with Juno, signifying our relationship principle, hovering in the last degree of Libra in hard octile aspects to the nodal axis, the line of destiny or karma, and with Ceres in Aries, symbolizing our nurturing principle, in another semi-square aspect to retrograde Neptune in Pisces, who is a symbol of the collective unconscious. This means that a new seed was planted in regard to our past, traditions and issues related to home, country, roots, family and belonging while a relationship situation had reached a stage of urgency, where a crisis could no longer be avoided due to ongoing confrontations and unresolved conflicts, but has to be worked out during this cycle if we want to improve our relations in the future. Moreover, the never-ending cycle of using force, brutality, violence and aggression in the way we seek to protect and self-preserve requires a review of our ideals, expectations and projections. Because this New Moon happened on the ‘birthday’ of the US, it brought renewed attention to the past of the US and the civil war that preceded it. As both, the Sun and Mercury met in superior conjunction, which is similar to the Full Moon phase in the lunation cycle (inferior conjunction or ‘New Moon phase’ was on May 9) and moved into opposition with retrograde Pluto in Capricorn, the collective ‘shadow’ of this country was highlighted and the themes referring to the struggles of the forefathers, especially in regard to race, power and wealth, were reenacted. Under these conditions, Juno re-entered Scorpio, Pluto’s sign, ushering in a period during which we have a chance to evolve from these circumstances. Now, at this stage in the cycle, Venus in Cancer, signifying traditional values and safety needs, is engaged in hard octile aspects to the nodal axis, while Mars in Scorpio is sitting at the apex of a Yod (a finger of God) with Vesta in Gemini (focus, dedication) and Eris in Aries (principle of discord) and Mercury in Cancer, symbolizing our habitual thought process, is squaring Uranus in Aries (progress, change, reform), following up with a trine to retrograde Chiron in Pisces (reconsideration, sympathizing) and a sesqui-quadrate to retrograde Saturn in Sagittarius, necessitating a review of our beliefs about authority, control and structure. Thus, the ‘crisis in action’ that accompanies the First Quarter Moon, challenges us to improve our character (keyword of the Sabian Symbol for the Cancer New Moon) or the way we tend to react and respond. The Libra Moon asks us to cultivate cordiality, peace and diplomacy and to strive for sophistication and civility in general if we want to succeed and be able to settle our conflicts. Mars in this position implies a choice we must make regarding our intentions, actions, approach and modus operanti and this refers to taking either the high road or the low road. If we go down the low road, our problems will continue and eventually intensify and escalate, but if we follow the high road, we can win others over for our cause and help and support each other. It all depends on what we focus on and if we are willing to try harder and set a positive example that has the potential to inspire others to imitate and emulate.

Tarot card of the day is the “6 of Cups”, suggesting that past efforts are being rewarded and pleasant or nostalgic memories are resurfacing. Past connections can serve some useful purpose. However, we need to look toward the future now and lay solid foundations in this regard. It’s important to be keenly aware of the blessings in our lives and to take some time out to enjoy the good moments, for they are special.
